Titanium in the Armament Industry:From Mortar to Tank
Time:2026-01-19 Source:Hongwang Hits:197

In modern warfare, the golden rule of military design has become "30% weight reduction equals 30% survival rate improvement." Titanium alloys, with their low density of 4.5g/cm³ (only 60% of steel) and tensile strength of ≥895MPa, are emerging as the "material code" in the arms industry. From single-handed titanium mortar systems to armor capable of withstanding armor-piercing projectiles, this "space metal" is reshaping the technological landscape of defense equipment.

Operating Condition Characteristics:Extreme Environment of "Extreme Challenge"

Titanium must remain stable under triple extreme conditions:

1. Temperature Hell: From-50℃ Plateau Cold Region to 600℃ Gun Barrel Temperature,TC11 Titanium Alloy Can Maintain 640MPa Durable Strength

2. Corrosion-resistant battlefield: The naval equipment is made of TA2 pure titanium, with a corrosion rate of <0.001 mm/year, which is 1/50th that of stainless steel.

3.Impact test: The mortar mount plate must withstand an instantaneous impact force of 300MPa (equivalent to three elephants standing on a 1 m² area). The TC4 titanium alloy achieves impact toughness of **≥50 J/cm² through forging in the β-phase region.

The difficulty of manufacturing: the game between high temperature, high viscosity and high elasticity

Titanium alloy machining is called "the Mount Everest of metalworking":

       1. Cutting heat trap: With thermal conductivity only 1/7 that of steel, the cutting zone temperature can reach 1000°C, requiring ultra-fine-grained cemented carbide tools (WC-Co alloy).

       2. Welding Oxidation Hardening: Welding Strength of 90% of Base Material and Crack Rate <0.5% by Electron Beam Welding.

       3. Difficult Problem of Elastic Deformation: Processing Springback is 3 times that of Steel, Need to Use Stress Release Annealing Process (550℃ for 2 hours).

       Star Product Matrix

1. The Lightweight Revolution of Individual Weapons

The PBP201 mortar features a fully titanium barrel and mounting plate, with a combat weight of 8.5kg. Designed for high-altitude infantry, it can be  operated with one hand

QJZ-171 Heavy Machine Gun: Titanium Alloy Gunstock Reduces Weight by 40%, Continuous Firing of 1000 Rounds with B         arrel Deformation <0.1mm

2. Upgrade of Armored Vehicle Protection

VT-4 tank's titanium alloy turret: Ti-6Al-4V composite armor with 120mm thickness (equivalent to 200mm steel armor), achieving 20% weight reduction.

The airborne combat vehicle frame: The titanium alloy body achieves a 15% weight reduction, and the ceramic armor can be airdropped by the Y-20.

Procurement Notes

1. Certification: Priority shall be given to AS9100D-certified enterprises. Military-grade products must provide GJB 2744A-2019 inspection reports.

2. Quality control: Oxygen content ≤0.13%, ultrasonic flaw detection threshold ≤φ0.8mm.

3. Transport protection: Vacuum packaging with argon filling to prevent surface oxidation.
